We did our shopping... at the LCBO and the Valu-Mart grocery... on the way back we had a 12 pack of beer on the lower rack of the borrowed shopping cart from the marina. Of course it slipped off the rack going down hill and broke 4 of the 12 glass bottles in the pack! Kathi dove to the side walk and started sucking up the beer from the broken bottles - NOT, she picked up the broken glass and carefully picked up the broken glass and then went back to the LCBO to see if we could get a replacement - NOT! So we lost 1/4 of our beer!!! Should have gotten cans, or been more careful about where we put the 12 pack of Rickard's Red. I think we will survive, but I should have had Kathi put the 12 pack in the upper part of the cart even if it crushed something... Oh, well...
We had dinner at the Twin Bluffs Bar & Grill and talked to some fellow boaters... nothing exciting and unfortunately we did not get up and look about in the middle of the night to see if there were any Northern Lights....
Tuesday August 10 – Took our time getting up: cannot hear the Roy Show down here in the "canyon" between the escarpment bluffs in Gore Bay, so no use moving fast. Besides, Kathi has a 1:15pm doctor appointment to see if she can get a prescription refilled. Hopefully that will go smoothly and one of the two pharmacies here in town will have what she needs, and we will be out of here before 3pm and off to Beardrop Harbor.
We went to the "Rocky Raccoon Cafe" for lunch. Kathi had a Spring Salad and I had the roasted red pepper soup and some Tibetan Momo Dumplings. Interesting place... Kathi is off making phone calls, and going to the doctor. We checked and both pharmacies in town have the medication she needs (current supply runs out August 28th).... I have my orders to look things up on the internet and look to see if we can get a week in early October at Club Intrawest Mont Tremblant... Hope to be off to Beardrop soon....
Kathi returned around 2:45pm and we untied and headed for the gas dock and Canadian Yacht Charters store (same place). The dockhands were a little slow and doing a lot of BS’ing with a big powerboat filling up with around $1000 of Diesel. We almost did not get any help docking in the minimal space remaining. Once we got their attention, the pump-out and fueling went smoothly, albeit slowly and humorlessly. We both went into the CYC store where you can buy the ice and vacuum packed smoked Lake Trout. Unfortunately there was a couple who evidently had just returned from a charter and were buying over $200 in T-shirts and other souvenir paraphernalia for all their relatives and yacking away about it. We had to wait in line for the only cash register available. By 3:30pm we were finally on our way after we had to untie ourselves from the dock – dockhands too busy yacking to bother with us. I would have to say Gore Bay was somewhat of a disappointment for us.
Since we left late and had a ways to go to get to Bearsdrop Harbor, I wanted us to be moving at maximum speed. The wind was just barely sailable, but we kept the engine on for an extra boost. We were able to hold 35° to 45° on to the wind and 7.6 to 7.8 knots with the engine boost. If we just sailed we probably would have been holding 6.5 to 7 knots of boat speed.
We approached the short-cut into the Whalesback Channel at Le Sueur Island. It was a little tricky and we went off course a little while trying to haul in the headsail and then the mainsail, but stayed in deep enough water and away from rocks – although it looked a little precarious a couple of times. Crossing the Whalesback Channel was easy but the entrance into Bearsdrop Harbor was a tricky one too. I almost screwed up at the last minute and almost went to the wrong side of a set of rocks. The bottom was coming up and getting shallower than I expected so I stopped and had Kathi re-check our route in to the eastern end of the harbor. It could have been a disaster, but more an embarrassment as the bottom was mud and weeds and I was not going onto rocks.
It was pretty crowded when we got in there. On the way in we passed four or five boats coming out, and the ones who stayed numbered 25 that night. Anchor was down and we were ready to relax just after 6pm.
As usual, we searched for wildlife, but none was to be seen. We got up again after midnight to try and see some Northern Lights, but no luck.
A'Ghrian at the Gore Bay docks looking north at the fog bank slowly moving north our of the channel.
View of the famous round-house where the Rocky Raccoon Cafe is on the second floor.
Interesting mural painted on a building side wall on the main street in town.
