Covered Portage Cove

Saturday July 24 – It has been two months since we left Lake Erie, but it does not seem so long. We have another month or so before we head back. I am not sure we really want to head back at all. I would love it if we could have an “endless summer” up here in the Canadian Great Lakes!

We woke up this morning just before 9am and were able to “call in” in the Little Current (chan 71) at 9am to the Cruiser’s Net and announce our name and position. “Mast Transit” also checked-in and are to the west of us on the other side of Little Current. We may or may not “bump” into them as we head west – like us they are up here for the summer. We will check-in tomorrow. When I checked-in today, I made sure we told them we were from Cedar Point on Lake Erie, and tomorrow I will tell them the name of the boat (A’Ghrian) is Scots Gaelic meaning “The Sun”.

As usual we swam for awhile. This morning the water was 72°F and eventually warmed up to 76°F. In the early afternoon when the sky cleared and the sun came out we dinghied over to the trailhead up to the top of the quartz cliffs. Most of the trail was pretty easy except for the 100 yards up the final part to the first cliff. We also traversed to the south so we could mount the highest cliff above A’Ghrian. I took photos in all directions, including into Frasier Bay were there were at least three sailboats heading into anchorages at Blueberry Island on the other side of the ridge that separates the cove from Fraser Bay to the north.

At the top of the lower cliff we met a couple that we talked for quite awhile. We talked about Bayfield, Tobermory, Wingfield Basin, and their trips around the area. They were on the wife’s brother’s 32ft Bayfield sailboat anchored a little bit up the inner anchorage from us. We saw her again later as she rowed their dinghy past our boat. It was a good hike and we made lunch when we made it back to the boat, followed by a couple hour nap.

There was more “music” tonight from first the Canadian powerboats blasting their stereo with “dance hall” Reggie, and thee was also folk singing with guitar and recorder coming from “Shadow” anchored a couple hundred yards behind us. We had some more Lake Trout for dinner with zucchini and onions, and the last of our Cajun rice for dinner. Afterwards, we sat in the cockpit until it got dark and the mosquitoes started swarming. As we relaxed, an Island Packet sailboat came in from “Green, OH” and anchored behind us. We talked briefly – Green is just south of Akron, but they actually keep the boat in Mackinac City, Michigan. We may see more of them tomorrow… We plan to head out to “Snug Harbor” on our way to Little Current – eventually. And yes – Tomorrow is another day…
