Covered Portage Cove to Heywood Island

Sunday July 25 – We have now been out for over two months. It does not seem that long and the thought of the last month as underway just does not seem possible. I got up around 7:45am, looked around, and went back to sleep for another hour. It is now 8:45am and I am getting ready to listen to and check-in with the Cruiser’s Net on VHF channel 71. I made the coffee and will prod Kathi to get up so we can get organized a moving to Heywood Island.

We listened to the Cruiser’s Net on 71 and checked in. We said we were going to Snug Harbor, but as we sailed through the Lansdowne Channel we decide to continue on to Heywood Island instead. I jumped below and created a new route on the Garmin by modifying the one to Snug Harbor. At Heywood there are two anchorages: the main one after you enter on the west end; and a channel that goes over to the east that opens up into a little bay. Kathi kept saying we should go over to the eastern anchorage after we dropped ours in the western one. Since the wind was to come from the West and pipe-up, I preferred staying where we were. We did eventually move a little south and closer to the shore before we made diner. But I acquiesced and took the dinghy over there around 2:30pm to check it out.

In the eastern anchorage we found a Beneteau 42 named “Jenessa II”. We approached and asked if it would be OK to take a photo of their boat’s name as it was the same as our daughter’s, and we conversed for awhile. They invited us back to go over charts and visit in about an hour or so. We went back to our boat and did not like how the powerboat next to us was swinging so we moved south of him. We swan for a bit and then packed up our charts and a bottle of Pelee Island Merlot and headed back to “Jenessa II”. We spend a few hours talking with them, getting their suggestions for places to go and anchor, and an invite to join them in Little Current on Thursday (not sure where we will be by then). It was a nice time with Ed and Carolyn and we hope to bump into them again.

Back to the boat for grilled whitefish and corn with salad. Although the wind was blowing, we had a very calm anchorage and slept well.
