Thursday June 17 – After all the rain on Wednesday, we were glad that the sun came out. We filled up the front water tank so we would be ready to leave by early afternoon. Then we decided to go for a hike up to the Corran (ruins of a large late 1800’s stone house) and then along the Spirit Rock trail that connects with the Bruce trail. The Spirit Rock trail goes along the escarpment on the north side of Colpoy’s Bay from the Wiarton marina, and forms a loop that takes you back into town. We started out around 11am and were back in town my 2pm. We stopped off at the Foodland to get a few last things and then returned to the boat. By 3pm we were pulling away from the dock and headed for Kidd Bay again.
We started out motoring slowly with the mainsail up. The wind was pretty much straight out of Wiarton and directly behind us (from the Southwest). It started to pick up so we put out the headsail and turned off the motor. We were moving along at 5 knots. The stronger wind put us in a position of reevaluating our destination. Kidd Bay is very open to southwest winds and has a long fetch from Wiarton (meaning waves can build). The forecast was calling for stronger winds from the Southwest overnight, so we changed our plans and headed for Little Port Elgin, a very good anchorage for North, West, and Southwest winds. This was on the Chippewa First Nation reservation, directly across the peninsula from MacGregor Harbor. Unlike that harbor, this anchorage was much “neater” and has a sand bottom. It was also a beautiful spot with two large bluffs (part of the Niagara Escarpment) on each side of the bay.
It was a pleasant evening. We had steaks and roasted asparagus with scallions for dinner. We sat in the cockpit and watched the sunset – no real bug problems – and then went to bed.
